The Order of Ouissam Alaouite (Wissam al-ʿAlawī / الوسام العلوي) was instituted in 1913 by the Sultan of Morocco. This example is the Breast Star (Type 1954), measuring approx. 76 mm.
Design:
Silver radiating breast star with a central five-pointed gilt and enameled star. White enamel arms with green wreath between the points, central red medallion with Arabic inscription:
الوسام العلوي (al-Wisām al-ʿAlawī) – “The Alawite Order”.
Reverse fitted with hinged pin and catch for wear.
Condition:
Original, with light age patina and surface wear on the silver. Enamel is intact and bright. Pin-back system functional. Please see all photographs for condition.
Historical and Collectible Significance:
The Ouissam Alaouite was widely awarded for distinguished service and became well known during WWII, when it was conferred upon Allied officers. The Breast Star (Type 1954) is a desirable piece for collectors of Middle Eastern and North African orders.
